Photo 365 - On Assignment

Hello There Everyone and Welcome to the Blog

I have three sets of photos here. The first is my photo project (the original page) entitled Photo 365 - On Assignment. It was a spin on a 365 photo project. I love the idea of the 365 project, but I needed a little more structure. I also needed some help getting out of my photographic comfort zone. I decided to take suggestions for monthly themes from the people around me and those who view my photos. I finished the project on January 15th, but please feel free to go back and enjoy my year in pictures.

The second page is dedicated to my favorite photographic subject, nature. Right now that page contains just photos I have taken in Everglades National Park. I just finished updating it, adding more photos, captions, and common and scientific names for all the shots. Please enjoy!

The third page is from the second UM Spring Football game in 2010. This was my first foray into sports photography. I was "working" this event with a friend of mine who blogs for a Hurricane's sports blog. All the shots came from the stands because we didn't have sideline passes, but I still got some decent shots. I hope to update this page with shots from this year's spring game. Go Canes!

Enjoy the blog!

Mustard

Ok, I totally phoned this one in today. I'm still not feeling all that great, but hey it's still an M picture. April starts tomorrow and a whole new theme, let's see what it will be...

Mohawk

Ok this is the final pic from the UM spring game that I will post as part of this project. Olivier Vernon is rocking a sweet mohawk. He's also a home grown Miami boy, from American Senior High School. I'll be posting some of my better pics from this game as a separate page in the next couple of days. Also keep an eye on the seventhfloorblog.com for Apdirtybird's write up (including some of my pics) anytime now. That's all I got for today, I'm a bit under the weather.

Make Believe

As in this was a "make believe" stadium! Sure Traz Powell Stadium is technically a stadium in the fact that it has seats and a field where sporting events are played. In reality the use of the term "stadium" is really pushing it. Incase it was not obvious from the picture, this is where the UM spring football game was that I attended and photographed. I wasn't expecting a huge stadium (it is owned by Miami Dade College) but this was a glorified high school field.... actually the biggest and most popular games played on this field ARE high school games!!

Maniac

This dude was NUTS!! My buddy and I were at the UM Football spring practice game to do some coverage for the blog my buddy posts for (seventhfloorblog.com). Most of my shots were of the action on the field, but boy oh boy were there a few gems taking place off the field. This wonderful gentlemen was kind enough to be sitting near us. Besides leading in cheers and stealing props from other maniac fans, he climbed and clung to the fence spiderman style. If this were a real game, at a real stadium, this yahoo would have been tasered and tossed out. But lucky for us this was not a real game, and not taking place at a real stadium. I will be posting more pictures from this game as separate page on this blog and some will be used on the Seventh Floor Blog in Apdirtybird's write up about the game. Enjoy!

Measuring Up

I've been trying to think of a way to come up with a Measurement picture. Photos of my tape measure by itself just haven't been that interesting. I thought it might be a bit more of a dynamic picture if something was actually being measured. And, as always, when I am in doubt and need some kind of subject to turn to during my times of photographic need I go to my best models - the minifigs. Mustachio Minifig makes his return in this picture as he is measuring up. Do you measure up?

Mad

I'm not usually one to take political, photojournalistic photos (I really don't do people shots that well) but I figured this would be good practice. For all you not following Florida educational politics here's the background info. The Florida Senate just passed a bill that would base half a public school teacher's pay on the end of the year test results of their students (FCAT, End of the Year Exams, etc.). The bill has moved to the House and Governor Christ has said he'll sign it to law if it makes it to his desk. I'll be the first to admit Florida education needs an overhaul, but basing HALF of a teacher's pay on unreliable test results is absolutely retarded!!! If you teach in a Pinecrest magnet school with affluent kids you are all set. If you teach in a less affluent area where parent's are eternally absent from your student's lives, 98% of the student's are on free/reduced lunch, and half your students have been in the country for less than three years - welcome to making minimum wage! Seriously, if this passes we could have people working at Burger King making more than the people teaching your children. Gotta love this state....

MacBook

Hey, it's the little magic white thing that makes this blog possible. Not only does it process the pics from my camera but it also gets me on the interwebs!! So far I have posted 23 photos of things that begin with M. All the while I have been using something that starts with M and it never dawned on me. Kind of funny being how much I love my mac. March is quickly coming to an end so send me theme ideas for next month.

Monkeys (of the Woot Variety)

This is actually yesterday's picture, I wasn't home (and awake) long enough at any time yesterday to post. There will be another picture posted later tonight. And on to yesterday's photo...

Sure, I could have gone to Metro Zoo and photographed some monkeys. Even better, I could have gone to Monkey Jungle and photographed any number of monkey species. Heck, I could have even gone to Jungle Island and found a primate or two. But ya know what all these places lack? Woot Monkeys! A very rare species indeed, two individuals inhabit my house and are even on occasion seen outside.

Massive

Above is one of the many large banyan trees that inhabits Coral Gables. I've been working on a specially requested photo for a good friend and this shot is a by-product of that little project. I was basically standing right under this giant and shooting straight up with the widest angle lens I have. It makes for a really interesting perspective shot. It also made for really interesting interaction between a little boy and his dad wondering why I was taking a picture of a tree...

Marauders

Third picture of the day and we're back on track. Here we got some mini-marauders invading my patio. These little minifigs are in their two legged walker chilling where my patio wall used to be. I have about 50 shots of these guys and about 45 of them were taken with me holding my camera on the ground, i.e. I wasn't looking through the viewfinder. Some, like this one turned out pretty well. Most of the shots did not work out to well, but hey I got at least a few good ones.

Multitude

And make-up picture number 2, palms, palms, and more palms!! This is the multitude of palms that inhabit one corner of my patio. I like shooting tall subjects from low vantage points, it adds a interesting perspective and sense of scale. Ok, one more pic coming later today.

Meat

So here we have make-up picture number one - Meat. This was the salted meat spread at the post-baptism party this weekend. Soulange and I were having a bit of a "take a picture of random things" seminar and I managed to sneak an "M" picture in there. By the way, this meat was very tasty.

Project 365 - On Assignment - March (Begins with M)

Mick

In honor of St. Patrick's Day I give forth a picture of some guy's t-shirt at The Bar. I figure since MTV has brought us the celebration of the guido cultural subset (them my people and NO I am not fist pumping for them), the Micks should get some love too! I love the Irish folks, they are great people, and great drinkers. I apologize for the shitty quality of this pic, it was taken from my point and shoot at a dark bar, after a fair bit of drinking.

Marina

Ok, finally posted a picture of the marina I was taking pictures at. Got some very nice light from the setting sun and the clouds diffused it all nicely. Nothing more for this post, just got back from St. Patty's day celebrations.... off to bed.

Mammoth Machine

Back at the marina again... I should really post of a shot of the actual marina, maybe tomorrow. Today is this mammoth boat lift that is at one end of the marina. This lift is huge!! I would love to actually see the boats, or maybe I should say vessels, that go in this thing. I love the contrasting blue and red coloration of the sky and lift. And those clouds add a nice touch too. Enjoy, and maybe tomorrow I'll post a shot of the marina...

Miss Miami

I was out photographing the marina down in Coconut Grove (ya know, because it starts with M) and I stumbled across this beat up old boat with the perfect name. Miss Miami was kind enough to let me photograph her and here we are. By my reckoning, her name fits this month's theme wonderfully. We'll see if I post any of the shots of the actual marina, we'll see.

Monument (Henry Flagler)

This is the large statue of Henry Flagler that is outside of the Coral Gables City Hall. I was tossing around a few different ideas for a south Florida monument and I figured that this one fits the most classical concept of a monument. I like the composition of shooting from right under the statue and using a lot of depth of field to get everything in the shot.

Monstrous and Monotone

Above we have one of the many fountains that are scattered throughout the Gables. This one happens to be on the side of the City Hall building. I'm not quite sure why this fountain isn't up and running, but I'm not going to complain because it left me a nice picture. I had the idea for monstrous before I found this fountain but had no idea what to shoot. I stumbled across this one while working another idea (more on that tomorrow). I decided to convert this one to monotone because I love how concrete structures convert into monotone so well.

Mirror

This one came about as I was working that crane picture from yesterday. This one came from the other end of the building. I was actually standing under the building in the reflection looking at angle for the crane picture, but when I looked up and straight ahead I saw this. This also happens to be the building my mortgage broker works out of!

Man-Made

I've been driving past these cranes for the last last six months on my way to work each morning. They look very cool in the pre-dawn light each morning and I've been wanting to take a picture. I decided to swing by today about an hour before sunset to get some pics. I noticed the reflections in a building across the street as I was driving up and liked it more than the actual cranes. The reflection also adds an extra level of depth to the man-made idea. The glass for the windows is man-made, and they are reflecting the cranes (which are also man-made) that are creating a man-made building.

Miller Minifig

I was having an in-depth conversation about beer with a friend earlier today and figured I could work it into the photo project. I started out with the can of Miller Lite, but it's a bit difficult making a good composition out of just a can of beer. So I decided to add some minifigs in various poses and this one struck me as the most amusing. So here we go, Miller Minifig getting tanked!

Meringue

I've passed by these meringues near the check out line at the grocery store hundreds of times. During the last week I've been meaning to pick them up on 3 separate visits and have forgotten them each time. I finally got them today and here they are. There are actually 3 different flavors in there, Original, Coconut, and Guava. If it hasn't become clear yet, I like food.

Begins with the Letter M

Wish I had thought about this 8 days ago, oh well. If you know me well enough then you know I love playing board games. I haven't played scrabble in quite a while and really miss beating a certain person, you know who you are. The idea for this popped into my head as I was eating dinner tonight. I've been noticing that I have been coming up with ideas for these pictures at the weirdest times. It is also dawning on me that I really need to get some home studio equipment to make some of these pictures easier.

Meatball

I love meatballs and they start with M!!! So here is a picture of my dinner tonight, before I devoured it. These were actually my first foray into the turkey meatballs and they turned out to be pretty good. Ok, it's been a long weekend so I'm cutting this one short. Let's see what I come up with for this week especially with FCAT all week...

Merlot by 3 Blind Moose

Make-up picture number two - a glass and bottle of Merlot by 3 Blind Moose. I'm gonna count this one as another double M picture since I got Merlot and Moose. I've had this bottle before and completely forgot about it until I was wandering through the merlot section of winn-dixie and saw it - jackpot! I really like this picture because of the reflections in the glass of wine. You can see me..... hmmm...... maybe this should be counted as a triple M picture.

Mangoes

OK, time to make up for Friday and Saturday's lack of pictures... and here we go! Mangoes!! It may not be mango season here in South Florida, but apparently it is in Peru. Here we got some nice mango slices with a couple of whole mangoes behind them. I like the nice red color of the rear mango and the imperfections in its skin. Also I really enjoy getting to eat my subject matter when I'm done with it!!

Mini-figs and Marshmallows

Yep, Mini-fig is back. It's been awhile since I've had a mini-fig sneak into a picture, figured it was due. I thought the contrast in size of the marshmallows and the mini-fig would be an interesting shot, and I believe it worked out well. Plus I pulled off another double "M" picture! Ok, that's it for this post, it's been a really long day...

Marshmallow Maple Syrup

Trying to photograph maple syrup, not working so well..... Trying to photograph marshmallows, not so much..... Try combining maple syrup and marshmallows into one photo....jackpot! I totally couldn't figure out a good shot of either maple syrup or marshmallows by themselves. I put the two together and I come up with the product shot for some new weird hybrid product.

Project 365 - On Assignment - March (Begins with "M")

ME

My theme for the month of March is "Begins with M" - I have picked this theme because mom's birthday is in March, and mom begins with "M", and my mom's name is Mary which also begins with M!! Lots of M's... I was going to kick off this month with a picture of mom, but I felt that since it wouldn't be a picture from this month it would be defeating the purpose of this project. Hopefully I will be able to get a picture of mom this month! So I had to figure out another word that begins with the letter M. As I was out running around it dawned on me that word "me" begins with the letter M. It was late in the afternoon, the light was right, and I had me tripod with me. Viola! Picture number one for the letter M, Me.
