Photo 365 - On Assignment

Hello There Everyone and Welcome to the Blog

I have three sets of photos here. The first is my photo project (the original page) entitled Photo 365 - On Assignment. It was a spin on a 365 photo project. I love the idea of the 365 project, but I needed a little more structure. I also needed some help getting out of my photographic comfort zone. I decided to take suggestions for monthly themes from the people around me and those who view my photos. I finished the project on January 15th, but please feel free to go back and enjoy my year in pictures.

The second page is dedicated to my favorite photographic subject, nature. Right now that page contains just photos I have taken in Everglades National Park. I just finished updating it, adding more photos, captions, and common and scientific names for all the shots. Please enjoy!

The third page is from the second UM Spring Football game in 2010. This was my first foray into sports photography. I was "working" this event with a friend of mine who blogs for a Hurricane's sports blog. All the shots came from the stands because we didn't have sideline passes, but I still got some decent shots. I hope to update this page with shots from this year's spring game. Go Canes!

Enjoy the blog!

Water Droplets Galore

So many little nooks and crannies, so many little water droplets. Time to start considering themes for May...

Forest Creek (or "crick" if you are from western PA)

Ok, this is not a current picture, this from this summer when I was back home in NJ. This little stream goes through one of the parks I like to hike through, it's just a beautiful place. Gonna try and get some fresh water pics up this weekend to end April with.

Bobbing for apples.... err....

This baby ibis has given a few really good pictures as he spent the morning wandering around the glades. Here we have him feeding in the shallow marsh areas of the glades.

Why buy the bird when you get the reflection for free...

Who needs to actually show the bird in a picture, forget it. All about the reflection.

CRASH!

Ok, back on schedule. Waves crashing over the rocks.

Ramming Speed!

This is Saturday's picture. Sorry for the delay, the new place doesn't have internet yet.

Long Walk, Short Pier

15 hours of home improvement projects today = tired. Pictured above is a nice little view down a shot pier.

Leafy Island

Just a little leafy outpost of life in the middle of a drainage pond. Not much to say today, very tired from working on the house.

Hunt and Peck

Truthfully, I was going to post of picture of just the water in the background. All the cool colors of the different sand, mud, seaweed, and so on make a nice mish mash of colors. Then I decided there should probably be something real to focus on in the picture, hence the bird.

Water, On the rocks

It's amazing how water, even in the smallest amounts can look cool. This was shot in a small brook that has a very pebble-y bottom. The water in this picture probably wasn't more than maybe an inch and half deep.

Sea Birds (Assorted)

Bird buzzing the beach and attacking bathers!!! Well, at least half of that statement was correct. Keeping it short today, just spent a long time painting the new place.

Two in the hand.... err... pond

I have come to self realization that I really like reflection pictures. I'm not quite sure why this is but they are still nice photos. I like this little guys beady red eyes, he seems a little demonic. I'm being lazy and not looking up the actual name and species of this bird, so I'm just gonna call him the florida devil duck... probably cooler than his real name anyway.

What do you see?

Sorry for posting Saturday's picture on early Sunday morning, been out and about most of the day. About the picture, I can only imagine what this little guy is looking at... I'm going to assume he is eyeballing his dinner. I love the little droplets of water that have beaded up on his back, very cool.

Lying by the pool

Everyone loves to hang out poolside on a sunny day, apparently so do large gators. This big fella was out enjoying the early morning sun and watching all the tourists and locals wandering by. Beautiful morning for a beautiful photo.

Fast Food

Sometimes you just have to each quick. This little guy kept running back and forth to grab quick bites as the waves crashed up and washed back. I really like the glassy sheet of water that coated the beach after each wave, and the look of the wave heading toward the little guy has a cool look to it too.

Long Beach

No this not actually Long Beach, just a long beach. I figured if one wave was a good picture, three waves had to been really really good! You even get a nice little arc on the horizon.

Barrel Roll

Really dig this picture of a barreling wave. It has a nice combination of colors in the wave, but it also has nice colors in the fore and background. This is to me the coolest motion that a wave does, just really amazing.

Roll Tide

A little more crashing waves for everyone. I'm thinking I'm gonna have to figure out how to start making money of these pictures so I can pay for the new house...

Sea Patrol

3 pelicans patrolling their area. The pelican is a very common bird in South Florida, these giant flying beasts are all over the place. I don't have very many decent "birds in flight" shots, so even though there are still some issues I have with this photo I still like it because I got them flying.

Crash

Water crashing over some rocks! One of the most exciting places for water is where it meets the land. Water does so many interesting things when it meets the shore. Waves, ripples, crashing over rocks, some many dynamic happenings and never any two shots the same.

Water Backdrop

Ok, I know the water isn't really the main subject of this one. But the water makes a really pretty backdrop for this picture. It looks like one of those fake backdrops you get for a school yearbook picture. That is actually the water of the Everglades though! Incase you are wondering, the bird is double crested cormorant.

River of Grass

Exactly how the everglades got it's name, the river of grass. Here was a nice little patch where you could see the river and the grass part. The blue sky above and stillness of the water made for a nice reflective surface. The grass in the center has the coolest reflection.

Log Reflection

Beautiful reflections of a fallen tree in the great morning light. This was near part of Anhinga Trail in Everglades National Park where there is a real shallow area that had about two dozen alligators lounging around. Most people were busy looking at the gators and wading birds, but me being me, I was busy focusing on random stuff like a fallen log. Got a nice picture out of my lack of attention span.

Mangrove Roots B/W

I love the way water looks when put into monochrome. This shot became especially interesting because these mangrove roots were in the shade with sunlight peeping through and the water was very muddy. The highlighted parts of water give a cool fog-like effect whereas the shadowy areas give way to reflections of the trees above. All in all, I just really like black and white water shots.

Gator Head

Figured I gave ya one end of the gator yesterday, might as well get the other end today. I was panning with this little guy as he was swimming down a little channel. The water and the plants have a little bit of a motion blur going on. I'm also really digging the reflection of the gator's eye, very cool.

Riding the Edge

I run into this problem a lot, I take similar pictures and can't decide which one I like more. So I decided to post both of them. I really enjoy pictures of water droplets, taking them can be a pain in the ass without a macro lens (which I don't have, yet) though. Got some more Everglades pics coming along soon too, a couple might make into this water theme.

Hanging On

Oh come on now, did you really think I was going to do 30 straight days of Minifigs? I mean, I know I have been sick all week, but I haven't been delusional. April's real theme is Water, every picture will involve water in one way or another. I'm aiming to make water the subject of each picture but we'll see how that goes. So here is the first water picture. We got a small droplet of water hanging on to a leaf on the bushes outside my place. You can almost make out the reflection of my patio in the droplet.

MINIFIGS - MINIFIGS - MINIFIGS

Yeah that's right, this month's theme is Minifigs! 30 days of Minifig glory! 30 days of Minifigs doing what they do best, being Minifigs! Expect new (new to this blog at least) Minifigs! Expect Minifigs in new places! If a Minifig can photographed doing it, it'll be here! Minifigs!!
