Photo 365 - On Assignment

Hello There Everyone and Welcome to the Blog

I have three sets of photos here. The first is my photo project (the original page) entitled Photo 365 - On Assignment. It was a spin on a 365 photo project. I love the idea of the 365 project, but I needed a little more structure. I also needed some help getting out of my photographic comfort zone. I decided to take suggestions for monthly themes from the people around me and those who view my photos. I finished the project on January 15th, but please feel free to go back and enjoy my year in pictures.

The second page is dedicated to my favorite photographic subject, nature. Right now that page contains just photos I have taken in Everglades National Park. I just finished updating it, adding more photos, captions, and common and scientific names for all the shots. Please enjoy!

The third page is from the second UM Spring Football game in 2010. This was my first foray into sports photography. I was "working" this event with a friend of mine who blogs for a Hurricane's sports blog. All the shots came from the stands because we didn't have sideline passes, but I still got some decent shots. I hope to update this page with shots from this year's spring game. Go Canes!

Enjoy the blog!

Red State / Blue State

The month, and this theme, is almost over. Only one more day of textures and patterns and I'm going to miss this theme. But all good things must come to an end. So with endings in mind, I decided to photograph something from my photographic beginnings. It is a weaved (don't know the name of that weave) cloth product. It is part of my camera gear and plays are very important role. Until tomorrow's grand finale (with answers for the second half of the month), Good Luck!

Rays

Since I won't be seeing any rays of sunshine for a couple days (stupid tropical depression/soon-to-be tropical storm) figured I take a bright yellow/gold picture. Ok, the object is not actually gold, it just took a bit of a gold tint because of the lighting in the room, it is actually silver colored. The part of the object I photographed is round and chances are you probably have one (yours may not have these markings). Good Luck!

Get a Grip

Sometimes we all need to a get a grip on things. This object does allow me to get a grip on at least one aspect of life, but which aspect is it? Here some hints about the object. Clearly it has ribs on it, more than are shown above. It has a rubbery texture and feel. It is only used with one hand. Good luck!

Polyps

No movie reference today... I'll have to try harder tomorrow. Tough to come up with some hints for this one without giving it away. Clearly it is metal with lots of little indents with holes in the middle. Uhh.... my sister should know what this one is. Yeah, that's all I got. Good luck!

Cell Blocks

It's grey, it's metal, and it's NOT a window screen. It's bigger and thicker than a window screen. Now how much bigger and thicker, well that I'm not telling ya. Good luck!

Diamonds are Forever

Woah, first a Conan reference and now a James Bond reference! I'm on fire!! Watch Ian Fleming's estate sue me now... This picture, like the last one, is made of metal. There is a reoccurring pattern of diamond like shapes that add a 3D texture to this item. This item is pretty big, this shot is not as macro as some of the previous shots. Good luck!

The Riddle of Steel

This picture is for Thursday, September 24th. Sorry for the delay posting this on guys. Between the highly recommended school "data chats" at Blue Martini and the Canes game last night I didn't get home in time to post a this picture, but here it is! Woo, Conan reference!! Now this picture is clearly made of intertwined metal strands, but what is it? Don't get hung up on it, okay?

Hexagonal

Sorry if this is a short one but I was in a brain sucking meeting all day without, I literally feel so much stupider than when I woke up this morning... Hints - it's got a rough texture, it has a continuous pattern of red hexagons, and be careful if you strike it.

Kryptonite Garden

Yep, that's right, I'm growing Kryptonite crystals! And in different colors! I will post a punnett square later showing you the different genotypes (and their corresponding phenotypes ) so you can grow you own at home. Hints - there are long strands in multiple colors, you should definitely have one of your own, and they come in many different colors. Good luck!

Streaks

No, my camera did not tweak out and go old school scrambled cable channel on me. This is the picture. The object has a whole lot of layers to it, with many different color. You probably have a few around your house. No more hints or this one will become way to easy.

Countershading

Countershading is a form a camouflage where an animal is dark on top and lighter colored on the bottom. This object is also exhibits this form of coloring, but it is clearly out in the open. It is also made of wood and has a string running through it (clearly...). Good luck!

Rows

And back on schedule, so lets get some hints out there. It come in rows, 5 to be exact. This is one is worn down and beaten up. I don't like it (the object, not the picture). Good luck!

Waves (Friday, September 17)

Sorry for the late post, was out most of yesterday. So on to the hints. Clearly it is made of metal. It has repeating rows of metal spines with smaller row behind them. It cuts things. Good Luck.

Ridged

Yes, "ridged" is a word for those of you who will ask. And yes, I meant to use "ridged" and not "rigid" for the rest of you who will ask. So we clearly have four sections. Each section has some ridges in various states of wear. There appears to be some kind of chemical reaction which tarnished each section. I'll give ya a dollar if you can guess this one, good luck!

Round and Round

Half way through the month and I've really been enjoying this one. So before I give you the answers from the first half of this month let's do some hints for this one. Clearly it is round, and made of metal. There is a circle within another circle. And I use this to repair damage that I cause. Good luck!

Okay, here we go, answer key for photos 1 -14: 1. Pillow 2. Painting (One of Mom's with sailboats) 3. Golf Towel 4. Glass from bathroom window (Pattern 62) 5. Cufflink 6. Cufflink 7. drawer knob 8. Lint brush 9. Thimble (side) 10. Sneaker 11. Thimble (top) 12. Spool of thread 13. Ratchet (handle) 14. Watch band - So how did you do??

Links

Ya'all know how much I like shiny, reflective things! You get to see little bit of my office in the reflection. Ok here some hints: 1. It's metallic (duh) 2. It is definitely well worn, as is evident by all the scuff marks 3. I am totally mentally lost without it. Good Luck!!

In - N- Out

I was going to do any easy one for today, but what fun would that be?!?! As for some hints. It is clearly made out of metal. It is hard to tell from the picture but this object is cylindrical, hence the cool in and out optical illusion. And the last hint, it's a tool. Make sure to check back on the 15th for answers to the first half of the month.

Dimples

Woah! Lots of dimples! It's not my new metallic golf ball (huge yardage!!) Let's see about some hints. This is a tough one to give hints for. Obviously it's metallic and have lots of dimples. It's small, and most guys have never used one of these. I can't say much more without making this to obvious. So good luck!

A Forest of Bristle Anemones

Is it my first underwater picture? Did I secretly buy a $1500 worth of underwater housing and flash and accessories and take some underwater shots??? Uh... yeah because I could totally afford that. Ok it's not a underwater shot. It does have a reoccurring pattern of these like bristles. It does help you get clean. Chances are you have one. But what is it?

That's right people, Earth revolves around the Sun. Don't worry, don't go pulling your hair out. This one might be a little easier to guess than the last couple days. Good luck!

Cell Shaded

Let's see, what hints can give about this one? Obviously there is a repeating pattern of square cells. Yesterday's hints also apply to this one. And also like yesterday I didn't even realize this pattern was there until I put this object under my macro lens. I really need to start looking my closely at things when I buy them.

Starburst!

Oh good luck guessing this one! Okay, okay, here are a couple of hints. Hint 1: There is a scuff mark in the upper left hand corner. Hint 2: I rock this when I want to look sharp. If you figure this out you are a really good at this game. I didn't even know this pattern was on this object until it went under my macro lens.

Blast from the Past

We got us here a little reminder of a past job. I used to work with a lot of this material during my formative years. Guessing the material might be easy, but can you figure out the name of the pattern. No? Go ask Dad, he'll probably know. Oh yeah, like how I managed to sneak in a little more Orange and Green?? It's all about the U!

Amber Waves

Welcome to September and a new theme. This month will be Textures and Patterns. I'm really excited about this theme and the possibilities it brings. I am not going write what is being photographed, I'm leaving it to the viewer to try and figure out what it is. Above we have what I have lovingly coined Amber Waves. This name came from the fact that the pattern of the "unknown" object looks like waves rippling out. I really dig the red and gold combo, and works well with September kind being the beginning of fall.

PS Love my macro lens!
